Mexico Vacations - Acapulco, Mexico

Most beach resorts towns in Mexico are all about relaxing and slowing down. One of the main exeptions is Acapulco - it's all about 24-hour non-stop action. It's a town famous for people eating dinner at midnight, dancing until dawn, and sleeping it off on the beach. Though full of international toursist, Acapulco draws a very large crowd from around Mexico. Because of its size, Acapulco can offer everything from budget hotels to five-star resorts and from secluded lunch spots of the beach to 1,200 person night clubs.

Acapulco is on the west coast of Mexico at the southern most part of Mexico, so the waters are very warm. Acapulco is sunny almost every day of the year - they boast having sunshinie more than 350 day out of the year. If there are showers, they tend to be in the evening, are very short, and only occur from June to October. The high season begins around mid-December and goes to about Easter.

How to Get There

You should be able to find many direct flights to Acapulco from major cities around the world, though most flights still go through Mexico City. If you can't find good flights to Acapulco, you could try flying into Mexico City and driving to Acapulco. There is a very scenic toll highway (Highway 95) that can get you there in just over 3 hours for about $50 in tolls. You can also take the toll-free highway (Highway 95D), but it will take you 6 hours. It is usually worth taking the toll highway if you have more than one person. The driving option will give you a car in Acapulco, which can be very handy to visit some of the beaches south and north of the city.

Other Towns Nearby

If Acapulco is a little too intense for the kind of vacation you want to do, there are some other beautful resort towns north and south of Acapulco. North of Acapulco you will find Ixtapa, which is a three hour drive away but also has it's own airport with direct flights form Mexico City or the United States. South of Acapulco you will find Puerto Escondido, Puerto Angel, and Huatulco. They are all fabulous destinations, but might be a littel far by car. Most people will fly into Oaxaca and drive from there. Puerto Escondido is the home of Zicatela Beach, which is a world class surf spot.
